Articles that prove that the people of the book are BOTH kuffaar AND Mushrikeen

-every kaafir  is a mushrik.

-every mushrik is a kaafir.

Mushrik means polytheist/idolater/pagan.

Kaafir means disbeliever.

Muslim Religion Questions and Answers

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: it is not permissible for the Muslims to attend the festivals of the mushrikeen, according to the consensus of the scholars whose words carry weight. The fuqaha' who follow the four schools of thought have stated this clearly in their books… Al-Bayhaqi narrated with a saheeh isnaad from `Umar ibn al-Khattaab that he said: "Do not enter upon the mushrikeen in their churches on the day of their festival."

The Two Eids and Their Significance  (www.islaam.org.uk)

It is mentioned in Sunan Al-Bayhaqee the statement of ‘Umar that, he said, "Do not learn the language of the Mushrikeen without a necessity nor enter the churches of Mushrikeen on their festivals because the anger of Allâh dissends on them then".

Umm Salamah said the Prophet used to fast on Saturdays and Sundays, and when asked he said: "They are two days of Mushrikeen’s holidays so I like to oppose them in their ceremonies." [Musnad Imaam Ahmad.]

Muslim Religion Questions and Answers

Shirk and kufr are the same when it comes to the ruling (hukm)

Ibn Hazm said:

Kufra and shirk are the same; every kaafir is a mushrik and every mushrik is a kaafir. This is the view of al-Shaafa' and others.

(al-Fisl, 3/124).

The Jews and Christians are kuffaar and mushrikeen. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"And the Jews say: `Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allaah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allaah. That is their saying with their mouths, resembling the saying of those who disbelieved aforetime. Allaah's Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth! … They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Tauraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] to worship none but One Ilaah (God — Allaah) Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)." [al-Tawbah 9:30-31].

It was reported from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: "By the One is Whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, not one of this nation, Jew or Christian, will hear of me and will die without having believed in that with which I have been sent, but he will be one of the dwellers of Hell fire."

(Narrated by Muslim, 153)

Muslim Religion Questions and Answers

44695: Are the Jews and Christians who exist nowadays mushrikeen (polytheists) and is it permissible to marry their women?

The Christians and Jews are kuffaar and mushrikeen, according to the Qur'aan, but they are excluded from the prohibition on marrying their women, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

"And do not marry Al-Mushrikaat (idolatresses) till they believe (worship Allaah Alone). And indeed a slave woman who believes is better than a (free) Mushrikah (idolatress), even though she pleases you"

[al-Baqarah 2:221]

This is the clearest way of reconciling between the two verses.

Allaah has described them as being mushrikeen as He says (interpretation of the meaning):

"They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] to worship none but One Ilaah (God — Allaah) Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)"

[al-Tawbah 9:31]

So they are kuffaar and mushrikeen, but Allaah has permitted us to eat their meat and to marry their women if they are chaste. This is an exemption from the general meaning of the verse in Soorat al-Baqarah.

according to Shaykh Ibn Baaz in Fataawa Islamiyyah, 3/172

Ahaadith for the believers (the non-kafir)

We should note here as well that the primary reason Allaah shows any real regard for the Jews and Christians has nothing to do with what they call themselves and has everything to do with what HE calls them. He gives them some regard because their predecessors really did have a book from Allaah and you should look carefully in the Qur'aan to see how important Allaah's Books are to Him. So they are treated better than other kuffaar, but they are mushrikeen no less.

(9017) Ruling on Christmas

Al-Bayhaqi reported on the occasion of their New Year and other celebrations: from Sufyaan al-Thawri from Thawr Ibn Yazeed from ‘Ata’ Ibn Deenaar who said: ‘Umar, may Allaah be pleased with him, said: 'Do not learn the language of the non-Arabs, do not enter upon the Mushrikeen in their churches on their feast-days, for the wrath (of Allaah) is descending upon them.'

It is mentioned in Sunan Al-Bayhaqee the statement of ‘Umar that he said, “Do not learn the language of the Mushrikeen without a necessity nor enter the churches of Mushrikeen on their festivals because the anger of Allaah …”

Impermissibility of Saying Rahimahu Allah for the Deceased Pope

But it is not right for a Muslim to say rahimahu allah (may Allah have mercy on him) or a similar prayer for forgiveness and mercy for someone like the Pope. The Holy Qur`an is very clear that no Muslim should ask Allah’s forgiveness for those who die committing shirk

It is not fitting for the Prophet and those who believe that they should pray for forgiveness for the mushrikun, even if they are of kin, after it is clear to them that they are companions of the fire. And Abraham prayed for his father's forgiveness only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy to Allah, he dissociated himself from him. Abraham was indeed most tender-hearted, forbearing (9:113-114)

It is a very common mistake among many Muslims to assume that anyone who is called a Christian belongs to ahl al-kitab and is to be distinguished from mushrikun. On the basis of this mistake they have allowed marriage with Christian women no matter what their beliefs. But the Book of Allah says very clearly:

They do commit kufr who say: "(God) is Christ the son of Mary." But Christ himself said: "O Children of Israel! Worship God, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever joins other gods with (the one true) God, God has forbidden him the jannah (paradise), and the fire will be his abode. For these wrong-doers there will be no one to help. (5:72)

[Since none of us knows in what state we would die, let us pray that may God save us from the fire of hell.]

This verse shows:

a)      Those Christians who say Jesus is God commit shirk.

b)      They violate the teachings, not only of the Prophet Muhammad but also of the Prophet Jesus (and indeed of all the prophets recognized in the Christian Bible).

c)      For them jannah is haram like it is haram for any other person who commits shirk

God does not forgive joining other gods with him; but he forgives whom he will sins other than that. Any one, who joins other gods with (the one true) God, has strayed far away (from the right way). (4:116)

Wearing of Engagement and Wedding Rings

This is a mushrik Christian custom

The difference between the mushrikeen and the kuffaar, and to which category do the Jews and Christians belong? - Q&A Library- Islam Q&A

What is the difference between mushrikeen and kuffaar? Are the Jews and Christians mushrikeen or kuffaar?.

The Jews and Christians are both kaafirs and mushrikeen. They are kaafirs because they deny the truth and reject it. And they are mushrikeen because they worship someone other than Allaah

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

9:30. “And the Jews say: ‘Uzair (Ezra) is the son of Allaah, and the Christians say: Messiah is the son of Allaah. That is their saying with their mouths, resembling the saying of those who disbelieved aforetime. Allaah’s Curse be on them, how they are deluded away from the truth!

9:31. They (Jews and Christians) took their rabbis and their monks to be their lords besides Allaah (by obeying them in things which they made lawful or unlawful according to their own desires without being ordered by Allaah), and (they also took as their Lord) Messiah, son of Maryam (Mary), while they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] to worship none but One Ilaah (God — Allaah) Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)”

[al-Tawbah 9:30, 31]

98:1 “Those who disbelieve from among the people of the Scripture (Jews and Christians) and Al-Mushrikoon, were not going to leave (their disbelief) until there came to them clear evidence”

[al-Bayyinah 98:1]

Shaykh ‘Abd al-‘Azeez ibn Baaz (may Allaah have mercy on him) said, refuting those who say that the word mushrikeen cannot be applied to the People of the Book:

It is most likely that the people of the Book are included among the mushrikeen, men and women alike, when this word is used in general terms. because the kuffaar are undoubtedly mushrikeen. Hence they are forbidden to enter al-Masjid al-Haraam, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“O you who believe (in Allaah’s Oneness and in His Messenger Muhammad)! Verily, the Mushrikoon (polytheists, pagans, idolaters, disbelievers in the Oneness of Allaah, and in the Message of Muhammad) are Najasun (impure). So let them not come near Al‑Masjid Al-Haraam (at Makkah) after this year”

[al-Tawbah 9:28]

If the People of the Book did not come under the general heading of mushrikeen, then this verse would not apply to them, and Allaah would not have referred to the beliefs of the Jews and Christians in Soorat Baraa’ah (al-Tawbah) where He says (interpretation of the meaning):

“they (Jews and Christians) were commanded [in the Tawraat (Torah) and the Injeel (Gospel)] to worship none but One Ilaah (God — Allaah) Laa ilaaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Praise and glory be to Him (far above is He) from having the partners they associate (with Him)”

[al-Tawbah 9:31]

So they are all described as mushrikeen, because the Jews said that ‘Uzayr is the son of God and the Christians said that the Messiah is the son of God; and because they took their priests and rabbis as lords instead of Allaah. All of this is the worst form of shirk. And there are many similar verses. End quote.

Majmoo’ Fataawa al-Shaykh Ibn Baaz, 4/274

And Allaah knows best.
